Haiti Orphanage Relief

Assisting An Orphanage In Haiti After Hurricane Damage

The Julia Project sent Haiti orphanage relief funding to the Faith And Love In Action Ministries (FLA) orphanage in Jacmel, Haiti. This was to assist them in the clean up efforts and rebuilding of the damaged areas of their home, after the devastating effects of Hurricane Ike ravaged through the area.

Faith And Love In Action, is located in Jacmel, on the southeast coast of Haiti, 70 kms from the capital, Port Au Prince.

A Brief History of The Home

The home was started by Marlaine and Daniel Alix, both born in Haiti. It began in Port Au Prince about 17 years ago as a refuge for homeless girls living on the streets. It has since grown to a home for boys and girls of all ages and currently houses 75 children. The move to Jacmel provided far more safety for both the children and the staff.

Hurricane Ike

Hurricane Ike started near Africa as a tropical disturbance at the end of August, 2008. It became a tropical storm west of the Cape Verde islands on September 1, and was a Category 4 hurricane by early morning on September 4.

Hurricane Ike caused over 195 deaths, and 74 of these were in Haiti. This small Caribbean island was already struggling to recover from the three previous tropical storms, Fay, Gustav, and Hanna, that had happened in a three week period causing 350 deaths in Haiti.
