Philippine Typhoons

Ketsana and Pepeng Disaster Relief

Disaster relief funds to assist victims of the recent Philippine typhoons were sent recently through our Filipino friends here in the Kawarthas.

Their connection to the Filipino Ministerial Fellowship in the Toronto area proved to be a good choice for our funds to go to. They will be distributed directly to families in the Philippines, known to this Canadian Filipino community.

Ketsana

On September 25, 2009, Typhoon Ketsana brought a deluge of rainfall to this Asian country. One month of rain fell in only one day.

The Government of Philippines reports the following sobering results:
  • 4,901,234 people were affected; 993,227 families in 16 cities and 26 provinces
  • 1030 casualties; 464 dead, 529 injured, 37 missing
  • 1383 school buildings destroyed

Pepeng

Five days later, on September 30, 2009, Typhoon Pepeng began to threaten the already hard hit areas. With winds from 135 to 160 kilometers per hour, it too left it's devasation.
  • 4,478,284 people were affected; 954,087 families in 36 cities and 27 provinces
  • 719 casualties; 465 dead, 207 injured, 47 missing
These storms have taken lives, either by drowning or from the mud slides. Excessive damages to houses, infrastructures, educational facilities, and agriculture with crop losses that are critical to the Philippine economy, have taken their toll.

Please consider making a donation to assist in the clean up and long term recovery efforts. Together we can make a difference!
