Feb 2, Happy Groundhog Day!

Tradition tells us when the groundhog comes out of his burrow to have a look around, the weather he finds tells us how much longer we wait until Spring arrives.

On a sunny day, he will likely see his shadow and go back into his hole to wait six more weeks before the winter weather is over.

On a cloudy day, like it is today here in Lakefield, Ontario, Canada, we can anticipate an early spring. Now that's only if you believe in folklore...

If you just believe in a little fun on a dreary February morning, Happy Groundhog Day from all of us at The Julia Project!

Jan 29, World Economic Forum

Five million Kenyan children will be de-wormed annually for the next five years. This is phase 2 of the World Economic Forum's de-worming program, aimed at parasitic worm infections in the younger population.

On a broader outlook, Deworm the World, a Young Global Leaders project, plans to bring treatment to 25 million children worldwide.

Children suffering with worms are usually hampered by stunted development and impaired education.

Kenya Prime Minister Raila Amolo Odinga is quoted to say "Many people in the developing world don't know the importance of child-based worming as one of the most sereious public health-based problems. Children are often too sick and weak to study at school or even to attend school at all...Children with worms are 13% more likely to be illiterate."

He has great hopes for the success of the program.

I met with Mickey DeCarlo, our contact from the First Nations project we are helping at Wemindji, James Bay. It was a pleasure to give her the donations of craft supplies for their Sunday school classes, and catch up on things.

We looked at a video made at Wemindji, with clips of residential school abuse survivors telling bits of their stories. What courageous, dear, people!

We shared a powerful moment when Mickey told of a young Cree girl searching for answers around this most sensitive, heart wrenching issue. She wondered why her grandma cried in her sleep at night.

The House of Commons finance committee is looking a changing the existing rules governing charitable donations in Canada.

The proposed changes are to include boosting the tax credit given for donations and removing capital gains tax on private company shares and real estate.

The recession has affected donations while needed services charities provide have risen.

Tory MP Peter Braid, is quoted saying, "It's a recognition of the important work that charities do and a concern for their sustainability."
