We have an amazing Earth filled with people from so many nations and cultures.

We think of the children needing our help and encouragement, and remember that we are all on the journey together.

Do something environmentally responsible on Earth Day and unite your heart with mankind, as we think about the bigger picture.

Apr 12, Pastor Benite Jeune Visiting From Haiti

We're excited to be meeting up with Pastor Benite Jeune, from R.I.S.E. Haiti Int., the project The Julia Project is supporting with educational assistance.

Our Mission Team of October, 2010, was hosted by Pastor Benite and his staff. We worked alongside the Haitian people in the rubble and destruction left from the devastating earthquake of January 12, 2010.

Pastor Benite survived the earthquake, while the building he was in collapsed in minutes, killing two of the colleagues he was talking with just moments before.

Pastor Benite will be speaking in Belleville on Sunday, April 15th, at Dessert Stream Church, 535 Dundas St E Belleville ON K8N 5P6

On March 31st Canadians are encouraged to shut off their lights between 8:30pm and 9:30pm in honor of Earth Hour. Please join in, even if you're not Canadian.

As we quiet ourselves in the hushes of candlelight, we are reminded of the adverse affects of climate change and other environmental issues impacting our planet.

Haiti and parts of Africa are listed in the top 10 countries at extreme risk. As drought conditions get worse, so do the threats to food security. Increased hunger leads to starvation and death.

Less developed countries, through no contribution of their own, bear the brunt of our changing climate, mostly caused by the economic choices of industrial countries.

We will think of our friends in both Kenya and Haiti in particular during Earth Hour tomorrow night.

Tradition tells us when the groundhog comes out of his burrow to have a look around, the weather he finds tells us how much longer we wait until Spring arrives.

On a sunny day, he will likely see his shadow and go back into his hole to wait six more weeks before the winter weather is over.

On a cloudy day, like it is today here in Lakefield, Ontario, Canada, we can anticipate an early spring. Now that's only if you believe in folklore...

If you just believe in a little fun on a dreary February morning, Happy Groundhog Day from all of us at The Julia Project!

Five million Kenyan children will be de-wormed annually for the next five years. This is phase 2 of the World Economic Forum's de-worming program, aimed at parasitic worm infections in the younger population.

On a broader outlook, Deworm the World, a Young Global Leaders project, plans to bring treatment to 25 million children worldwide.

Children suffering with worms are usually hampered by stunted development and impaired education.

Kenya Prime Minister Raila Amolo Odinga is quoted to say "Many people in the developing world don't know the importance of child-based worming as one of the most sereious public health-based problems. Children are often too sick and weak to study at school or even to attend school at all...Children with worms are 13% more likely to be illiterate."

He has great hopes for the success of the program.

I met with Mickey DeCarlo, our contact from the First Nations project we are helping at Wemindji, James Bay. It was a pleasure to give her the donations of craft supplies for their Sunday school classes, and catch up on things.

We looked at a video made at Wemindji, with clips of residential school abuse survivors telling bits of their stories. What courageous, dear, people!

We shared a powerful moment when Mickey told of a young Cree girl searching for answers around this most sensitive, heart wrenching issue. She wondered why her grandma cried in her sleep at night.

The House of Commons finance committee is looking a changing the existing rules governing charitable donations in Canada.

The proposed changes are to include boosting the tax credit given for donations and removing capital gains tax on private company shares and real estate.

The recession has affected donations while needed services charities provide have risen.

Tory MP Peter Braid, is quoted saying, "It's a recognition of the important work that charities do and a concern for their sustainability."

I'm proud to be a Canadian!

We get the best emails from time to time here at The Julia Project. We recently heard from Kiran, a grade 9 student working on her leadership project.

She is hosting an information booth during lunch break at her school and informing students about the Haiti earthquake and how it impacted the children and schools in Haiti.

She is giving the students the opportunity to donate whatever amount they like.

Saturday, March 26, 8:30 pm, is the time set aside for World Earth Hour 2011.

Make a stand against climate change and join the largest world-wide global change movement, pledging support for the planet.

It's a world-wide awareness campaign to remind us to stop wasting energy and create interest in wind and solar power.

Make your personal commitment to impact the environment by turning off your lights for one hour.

As an expression of sympathy to the people affected by the Japan earthquake and tsunami of March 11, please start your local Earth Hour with one minute of silence.
