Suspected to be an act of terrorism, three soldiers were shot dead by unidentified assailants, leaving the town under heavy military security.

Our hearts and prayers go out to our friends in Garissa, especially to the children we know and love so dearly.

In July, 15 were killed in raids on churches, and on November 5, a grenade attack on a Garissa church killed one police officer and left 11 injured.

This day is set aside to create awareness of the abuses and stresses many young girls around the world face each day.

In particular, this year’s theme is focused on ending child marriage, and stressing education as one of the strongest strategic measures to have in place to protect girls from harmful practices.

Staying in school builds a foundation for a healthier and more equipped girl to succeed in society. Many girls in third world countries, don't get this chance.

Here at the Julia Project Foundation, 75% of the students sponsored through the Laurie St Pierre Scholarship Fund, are girls.

We salute the United Nations in this effort.

Happy Thanksgiving

We have so much to be thankful for, here, in this great nation of Canada.

Today, and tomorrow, many families will gather together to share a bounty of food, exchange warm stories as they get caught up on each others busy lives.

In the midst of all the celebrating, let's reflect on 'our kids' who, because of HIV Aids, might not have a family to share with. They might not have a bountiful meal - in fact, perhaps no meal at all, and no warm stories.

Through our connections with them, I believe we are their 'far away' family, and we remember them with thanksgiving today.

We remember our donors with thanksgiving. Every little bit that we put together, makes something bigger:

big enough to put a child in school

big enough to put a meal in their stomach

big enough to know they're not forgotten and alone

big enough to spread some thanksgiving their way

Thanks for all you do to help us/them. Together we can make a difference!

Happy Thanksgiving from all of us at The Julia Project Foundation!

Jill Carty

Haiti Int., the project The Julia Project is supporting with educational assistance.

Our Mission Team of October, 2010, was hosted by Pastor Benite and his staff. We worked alongside the Haitian people in the rubble and destruction left from the devastating earthquake of January 12, 2010.

Pastor Benite survived the earthquake, while the building he was in collapsed in minutes, killing two of the colleagues he was talking with just moments before.

Pastor Benite will be speaking in Belleville on Sunday, April 15th, at Dessert Stream Church, 535 Dundas St E Belleville ON K8N 5P6

Please join in, even if you're not Canadian.

As we quiet ourselves in the hushes of candlelight, we are reminded of the adverse affects of climate change and other environmental issues impacting our planet.

Haiti and parts of Africa are listed in the top 10 countries at extreme risk. As drought conditions get worse, so do the threats to food security. Increased hunger leads to starvation and death.

Less developed countries, through no contribution of their own, bear the brunt of our changing climate, mostly caused by the economic choices of industrial countries.

We will think of our friends in both Kenya and Haiti in particular during Earth Hour tomorrow night.

On a sunny day, he will likely see his shadow and go back into his hole to wait six more weeks before the winter weather is over.

On a cloudy day, like it is today here in Lakefield, Ontario, Canada, we can anticipate an early spring. Now that's only if you believe in folklore...

If you just believe in a little fun on a dreary February morning, Happy Groundhog Day from all of us at The Julia Project!

This is phase 2 of the World Economic Forum's de-worming program, aimed at parasitic worm infections in the younger population.

On a broader outlook, Deworm the World, a Young Global Leaders project, plans to bring treatment to 25 million children worldwide.

Children suffering with worms are usually hampered by stunted development and impaired education.

Kenya Prime Minister Raila Amolo Odinga is quoted to say "Many people in the developing world don't know the importance of child-based worming as one of the most sereious public health-based problems. Children are often too sick and weak to study at school or even to attend school at all...Children with worms are 13% more likely to be illiterate."

He has great hopes for the success of the program.

It was a pleasure to give her the donations of craft supplies for their Sunday school classes, and catch up on things.

We looked at a video made at Wemindji, with clips of residential school abuse survivors telling bits of their stories. What courageous, dear, people!

We shared a powerful moment when Mickey told of a young Cree girl searching for answers around this most sensitive, heart wrenching issue. She wondered why her grandma cried in her sleep at night.
