World's Largest Fondue Party

by Niki
(Hamilton)

The organization "Stop the Traffik" (STT) based out of England, is involved in the fight against human trafficking.

They launched what they dubbed "The World's Largest Fondue Party" and encouraged people to host their own chocolate fondue parties around the world, using fair trade chocolate to raise awareness about buying fair trade chocolate.

Most of the world's chocolate is produced by people who are victims of human trafficking and are slave labourers.

The way our party went was that I bought $140 worth of fair trade chocolate at a local store. (I got a discount when I explained what it was for.)

Everyone paid a suggested donation of $10 to eat as much chocolate fondue as they wanted.

We had three types of fondue with a variety of foods to dip and had a contest for the 'weirdest dipped item' (like pepperoni pizza!).

After everyone had enough to eat, we sat down and watched a couple of videos and then broke off into small groups to discuss a case study (provided by STT).

The evening ended by everyone getting back together and having a large group discussion to discuss how we could make a difference in our own circles of influence.

It was a successful night with 100% of the proceeds going to STT and many more people walking away with more information about the issues of human trafficking and buying fair trade food and products.

More than a year later, people still refuse to buy chocolate unless it's fair trade-from the awareness of just one event!

It was delicious and fun. My only recommendation would be a change of venue, as a basement apartment just isn't adequate for 35 people and a chocolate fondue party. :)

Thanks For The Chocolate Fondue Fundraising Idea
by: Jill (The Julia Project)

Thank you Niki for reminding us of this important social issue that affects many impoverished children and adults around the world.

On a lighter note, anything to do with chocolate is an enticing fundraising idea to me!

I loved the contest aspect, too. Chocolate dipped pizza...hmmm....

Thanks for sharing with us Niki.
